Why Regular Rangehood Cleaning Matters (And How to Do It Right)

Your rangehood is the unsung hero of your kitchen — quietly working away to clear the air of smoke, grease, and odours. But like any hardworking appliance, it needs a bit of TLC to keep doing its job properly. Regular rangehood cleaning doesn’t just improve performance — it’s essential for air quality, safety, and even the lifespan of the appliance.

Let’s dive into why it matters and how to clean your rangehood the right way.

Why Clean Your Rangehood?

1. Improves Performance

Over time, vents and filters get clogged with grease and debris, preventing your rangehood from effectively removing smoke and steam. Regular cleaning helps it run efficiently, keeping your kitchen fresher with every meal.

2. Maintains Air Quality & Hygiene

A clean rangehood helps reduce lingering cooking smells and airborne grease, leading to a more hygienic home environment — especially important in open-plan living areas.

3. Prevents Fire Hazards

Greasy, oily filters are highly flammable. Cleaning them reduces the risk of grease fires, keeping your kitchen safer for everyone.

4. Avoids Foul Smells

Built-up grease doesn’t just look unpleasant — it smells bad too. Regular cleaning eliminates the grime that causes odours to linger.

How to Clean Your Rangehood Filters

  1. Remove the Filters
Most metal filters are easy to unclip — check for a latch or release mechanism.
  2. Soak in Hot Water & Degreaser
Fill your sink with hot water and a degreasing detergent. Let filters soak for at least 10 minutes (longer if they’re heavily soiled).
  3. Scrub Off Residue
Use a sponge to wipe away remaining grime, then rinse thoroughly under warm water.

Note: If your filters are dishwasher safe, you can skip Steps 2 and 3. The filters  can be placed in your dishwasher using a hot wash setting. Check your rangehood’s user manual to see if your filters are dishwasher safe.

  1. Dry Completely
Use a paper towel or microfibre cloth to dry filters thoroughly before reinserting.

Don’t Forget the Hood Itself

While your filters are drying:

  • Wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth and mild detergent (always refer to your user manual).
  • Check and clean the interior including the fan and ducting — again, follow manufacturer guidelines when using cleaning products.
  • Use a microfibre cloth to dry all surfaces and prevent moisture build-up.

How Often Should You Clean It?

Give your rangehood a thorough clean every 2 months (or more often if you cook frequently). Just 30 minutes of maintenance can make a huge difference in its performance and longevity.

Recirculating Installations – Carbon Filters
Does your rangehood vent to the atmosphere? If not, your rangehood is likely fitted with carbon filters which filters grease and odours from the air before recirculating the air back into the room. These filters are generally non-washable and are required to be routinely replaced every 3 to 6 months (check the manufacturer’s recommendations for your rangehood). This is important to keep your rangehood running efficiently.
