Oven Installation Adelaide Guide

A built-in oven installed into cabinetry

Replacing or installing a built-in oven is one of the most common kitchen appliance jobs in Adelaide homes — and one of the most frequently underestimated in terms of what's involved. Unlike plugging in a kettle or sliding in a freestanding appliance, a built-in oven installation involves cabinetry, dedicated electrical circuits, and in some cases gas connections that require licensed tradespeople.

This guide covers exactly what you should expect from a professional oven installation in Adelaide, what factors affect the cost, how to prepare before the installer arrives, and why DIY installation of a built-in electric oven is not something we recommend.

What Oven Installation Involves

Understanding the process helps you plan better and ensures there are no surprises on installation day.

Step 1: Delivery or supply of the new oven

The process begins with the oven arriving at your home — either via delivery from your retailer or brought directly by the installation team. If you've purchased through The Appliance Group, we coordinate delivery and installation together where possible, so you're not managing two separate bookings.

Step 2: Disconnection and removal of the existing oven

If you're replacing an existing oven, the first job is safe disconnection. For an electric oven, this means isolating the dedicated circuit at the switchboard before the oven is disconnected from its wiring. For a gas oven, the gas supply to the appliance is turned off before disconnection. This step is not optional — an oven should never be disconnected by removing it from the wall without first isolating the power or gas supply.

Step 3: Inspection of the cabinet opening and electrical supply

Before the new oven goes in, a quick inspection confirms that the cabinet cutout dimensions match the new appliance, that the existing wiring is in good condition and appropriately rated for the new oven, and that there are no unexpected issues with the cavity.

Step 4: Electrical or gas connection

For an electric built-in oven, the appliance is hardwired directly to a dedicated circuit — this is not a standard 10A plug connection. The electrician connects the oven's cable to the existing fixed wiring in the wall or cabinet. For a gas oven or gas cooktop, the gas line is connected using approved flexible hose, and the connection is tested for leaks before the appliance is used.

Step 5: Physical installation into the cabinet

The oven is slid into the cabinet opening, levelled, and secured according to the manufacturer's installation instructions. Trim kits (if applicable) are fitted. Anti-tilt brackets or other safety fixings are installed if required.

Step 6: Function testing

Once installed, the oven is powered on and tested across its core functions — heating, fan, grill — to confirm it's operating correctly before the installer leaves. This is the step where any installation issues become apparent, and they can be addressed on the spot rather than discovered the first time you try to cook.

Step 7: Handover and cleanup

The installer explains any settings or features you should know about, confirms the installation is complete, and removes packaging and the old oven if removal was part of the booking.

Types of Oven Installation

Not all oven installations are the same. The complexity — and therefore the time and cost - varies considerably depending on the type of oven and the specific circumstances.

Built-in single oven

The most common installation type. A single built-in electric oven is installed into a dedicated oven cavity in kitchen cabinetry. This is a standard job assuming the cabinet cutout and existing wiring are appropriate for the new appliance.

Built-in double oven

Two ovens installed in a stacked tower configuration. Typically requires a double-height cabinet opening. The electrical requirements may differ from a single oven — some configurations require two separate dedicated circuits. Slightly more complex than a single oven installation.

Freestanding oven

A freestanding oven sits on the floor with its own legs and cooktop, slotting into a gap in the kitchen run. Freestanding oven installation is generally less complex than built-in installation — it involves connection of the electrical or gas supply but no cabinetry work. However, the gap between surrounding cabinetry needs to be the right width, and some freestanding ovens (particularly 90 cm models) require anti-tip fixings to the wall or floor.

Underbench (built-under) oven

A built-under oven is installed beneath a continuous benchtop rather than in a tower unit. Common in kitchens with a single-level layout. The installation process is similar to a standard built-in oven, but access for connection work can be tighter in some configurations.

What Affects the Cost of Oven Installation in Adelaide

Several factors influence how much an oven installation costs. Understanding these helps you budget accurately and avoid surprises.

Type of oven: A freestanding oven swap (same fuel type, same general dimensions) is the simplest and least expensive installation job. A built-in oven installation is more involved. A built-in oven requiring cabinetry modifications is more complex again.

Fuel type: Electric-to-electric swaps are the most straightforward. Changing from gas to electric (or vice versa) involves additional work — either capping an existing gas line or installing a new dedicated electrical circuit. Either requires a licensed tradesperson and adds time and cost.

Cabinetry modifications: If the new oven has a different cutout size than the oven it's replacing, the cabinet opening may need to be enlarged or reduced. Cabinet modifications add cost and require a cabinetmaker or skilled carpenter in addition to the electrical work.

Electrical upgrade: If the existing dedicated circuit is not rated for the new oven (for example, if you're upgrading to a larger or more powerful model), the circuit may need to be upgraded by an electrician. This is an additional cost but essential for safety.

Old appliance removal: Removal of the existing oven can be included in the installation booking. This is included in the price of installation.

Access: Upper-level apartments, townhouses with narrow access, or kitchens in complex layouts can add time to a job, and some installation providers account for access difficulty in their pricing.

DIY vs Professional Installation

For freestanding gas ovens: in South Australia, connection to the gas supply must be performed by a licensed gas fitter. You cannot legally connect a gas appliance yourself.

For built-in electric ovens: the electrical connection (hardwiring to the dedicated circuit) must be performed by a licensed electrician in Australia. This is not a debate or a grey area — it is a legal requirement, and it's also a safety requirement. Built-in electric ovens draw significant amperage on a dedicated circuit, and incorrect wiring is a fire risk.

What homeowners can do themselves is the physical positioning — sliding an oven into a cabinet, fitting a trim kit, aligning the appliance — but the electrical connection must be signed off by a licensed electrician regardless of how confident you feel with wiring.

The practical reason to use a professional: Beyond the legal requirement, an experienced installer will catch things during the inspection phase that a DIY job misses — inadequate circuit rating, cabinet measurements that are off by a few millimetres, previous installation errors that need correcting. Getting it done right the first time is significantly cheaper than calling someone to fix a problem after the fact.

How to Prepare for Your Oven Installation

The smoother your preparation, the faster and simpler the installation day goes.

Confirm your cabinet cutout dimensions: Before the installer arrives, have the measurements of your existing cabinet opening on hand. If you're replacing an existing oven, check that the new oven's installation guide specifies a cutout size that matches.

Locate your switchboard: Know where your electrical switchboard is and ensure it's accessible. The installer will need to isolate the oven's dedicated circuit.

Clear the work area: Remove items from inside and around the oven cavity, and clear a path from the front door to the kitchen for appliance delivery.

Have the installation guide ready: Either print it or have it accessible on your phone. The installer will use this as reference for specific connection and safety requirements.

Plan for time: A standard oven installation takes 1–2 hours for a straightforward job. Allow additional time if cabinetry modifications are required.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does oven installation take?

A standard built-in or freestanding oven installation (same cutout size, existing dedicated circuit in good condition) typically takes 1–2 hours. Jobs involving cabinetry modifications or electrical upgrades take longer. Your installer should be able to give you a time estimate once they've assessed your specific situation.

Do I need an electrician to install a built-in oven in Australia?

Yes. In Australia, the electrical connection of a hardwired appliance such as a built-in electric oven must be performed by a licensed electrician. This is a legal requirement under the Electrical Safety Act and applies in all states including South Australia. The physical installation of the oven into the cabinet can be done separately, but the wiring connection must be completed and certified by a licensed electrician unless a suitable plug is fitted to the oven already and a suitable plug base is installed nearby.

Do you remove the old oven?

Yes, removal of the existing appliance can be arranged as part of your installation booking with The Appliance Group. This included in the price of installation. If you'd prefer to keep the old appliance, just let us know and we'll leave it with you.

What if the new oven doesn't fit my existing cabinet opening?

If there's a size mismatch between your existing cabinet opening and the new oven's cutout requirements, there are two options: select an oven that fits the existing opening, or modify the cabinetry to suit the new oven. We recommend checking cutout dimensions before purchasing — if you're buying through The Appliance Group, just tell us your existing opening size and we'll confirm compatibility before the sale is finalised.
